The Cormorant at 55 South will become the world’s southernmost hotel when it opens during the 2025/26 Antarctica season
Silversea has shared the name of the hotel it is preparing to open in Puerto Williams, the world’s southernmost city in Chile.
The Cormorant at 55 South is set to launch during the 2026/26 Antarctica season and will host guests as part of the line’s fly-cruise itineraries to the continent.
The name nods to the property’s location at 55 degrees south and also pays homage to Lakutaia, which is the indigenous Yahgan word for cormorant, the bird that is “a symbol of the seafarer and intended to bestow good fortune on guests”.
Silversea also revealed more details of the property’s 150 rooms, which will each feature “expansive” windows that offer views of either the surrounding forest or the Beagle Channel. Rooms will also be decorated with items handcrafted by regional artisans to “celebrate” local culture.
Bert Hernandez, Silversea’s president, said: “The Cormorant at 55 South is a tribute to the rich culture, breathtaking natural beauty and storied history of Puerto Williams, immersing guests in their destination before embarking on their journey to Antarctica.”
“Every aspect of The Cormorant is thoughtfully designed with our guests in mind, ensuring a comfortable and uniquely Silversea experience. Each room offers panoramic views of Patagonia, and the hotel creates a deep connection to the local community, providing specially designed experiences that will allow our guests to begin their expeditions sooner than ever, all in uncompromised comfort.”
The line has also recently launched Stories by Silversea, a video series that will “speak to the topics that matter most to its guests”. Included in the series will be multiple episodes that offer a behind-the-scenes look at the construction of The Cormorant at 55 South.
