Completion marks ‘significant milestone’ in operator’s reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
AE Expeditions has completed its first biofuel trial on its ship Sylvia Earle.
The successful trial marks “a significant milestone” in the operator’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The biofuel, according to its proof of sustainability certification, resulted in an estimated 90% reduction in fuel-related greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional marine fuel.
The trial was “completed smoothly, with no impact on engine performance”, and AE Expeditions is “committed to building on this success with further trials” when other vessels in the fleet return to Europe in 2026.
Sylvia Earle was also the first Infinity Class ship to trial hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) in May 2025 along the Spanish coastline.
Sustainability manager Sasha Buch said: “Operating in some of the world’s most climate-sensitive regions, we recognise that reducing emissions is one of our most urgent responsibilities.
“This first biofuel trial has provided valuable insights that will guide future testing and support the broader adoption of sustainable fuels in the maritime sector.”
