AmaMelodia will join sister ship AmaMagdalena to sail the Magdalena River
AmaWaterways has christened its second Colombia-based ship, AmaMelodia.
The event took place in Barranquilla with government representatives, community leaders and local partners in attendance, plus co-founders of the river cruise operator, Rudi Schreiner and Kristin Karst.
The ship’s future captain, Elisabeth Mercado Herrera, has been chosen as the ship’s godmother.
The 64-passenger vessel will join AmaMagdalena on the Magdalena River and operating the Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia itineraries.
Chief executive Catherine Powell said: “As we continue to expand beyond our European roots, destinations like Colombia represent an exciting part of AmaWaterways’ future.
“With AmaMelodia, we are building on our commitment to offer more diverse and immersive experiences in new regions, while continuing to deliver the high-quality journeys our guests expect.”
Mercado Herrera, who will be the first woman to captain a river cruise ship on the Magdalena River in Colombia, added: “As a Colombian and as someone who has been closely involved in this experience, this moment is incredibly meaningful to me.
“It’s something I’m very proud of, not just professionally, but for what it represents for my country.
“Bringing river cruising to the Magdalena opens new opportunities for the communities along the riverbanks, and I hope my career journey inspires more women to see a future for themselves in this industry.”
