Safari brand to take over management of two Governors’ Camp Collection locations
Wilderness is set to open its first safari camp in Kenya in June 2026.
Wilderness Mara will be located in the “wildlife-rich” Mara Triangle region of the Masai Mara National Park, with chances to spot elephants, lions, black rhinos, zebra and wildebeest on twice-daily game drives.
The lodge will be situated on the site of former Governors’ Camp Collection property Little Governors Camp and will feature 12 canvas tents, each with its own private terrace and outdoor shower.
With no family lodgings available on the property, the brand said the lodge was designed for couples or solo travellers “seeking tranquillity and deep connection to place”.
A pool, gym, spa and photography studio are also included in the camp’s facilities.
Wilderness will take over another Governors’ Camp Collection property in February 2026, transforming the nearby Governors’ Private Camp into exclusive-use lodge Wilderness Mara Villas.
Wilderness Kenya chief executive Hein Prinsloo said: “Formerly the legendary Little Governors’ Camp, the completely rebuilt Wilderness Mara carries forward a legacy of pioneering safari. For over 50 years, Governors’ set the standard for authenticity, conservation and community.
“Now, Wilderness is proud to honour and evolve that heritage – blending classic east African charm with elevated, low-impact luxury.”
The Mara Triangle is protected by the Mara Conservancy, meaning tourism is managed sustainably and within strict anti-poaching parameters.
Wilderness Mara guests will have the opportunity to observe the Great Migration of animals crossing the nearby Mara River, and spot more than 470 bird species present in the surrounding area.
Hot air balloon rides will also be available through Governors’ Balloon Safaris, alongside visits to local Maasai communities.
