Review: Family-friendly haven Restaries at Paradise Farm

Location: Restaries at Paradise Farm is tucked away in rural northern Suffolk, a county that is rapidly rivalling the Cotswolds as the go-to country escape for affluent city-dwellers. This new opening is located a short drive from the market town of Halesworth, while the quaint coastal towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold are around half an hour away. The property is a three-hour drive from London.

First impressions: As an independent, family-run property, our communication with the owners – Gemma and Thom Bon-Scherdel – starts before our arrival. We’re asked about our children’s preferences, sleep set-ups and anything we’d like stocked in our kitchen. We arrive under the cover of darkness, but my son’s excitement is instant as he spots the alpacas, Kunekune pigs and Pygmy goats that also call Paradise Farm home. Feeding the array of animals in the property’s paddocks is the first thing on the agenda after we wake from a deep, indulgent sleep in our super-comfortable Log Store room. The decor is homely yet high-end; it’s clear the owners know a thing or two about design.

The facts: The main building – an enormous 16th-century, red, thatched-roofed house that looks like something from a fairytale – is the family home, but is also bookable as a takeover for up to 12 people. Set within the grounds are the three-bed Cider Store; one-bed Gate House; one-bed Tack Room; and two-bed Cart Lodge. Each is unique in design and feel, with some boasting hot tubs. The farm’s heated swimming pool is a lovely addition, as is the children’s playground and trampoline. There’s no restaurant, but each cottage has its own kitchen. Private onsite dining can also be arranged, while pizza ovens and breakfast hampers can be delivered on request.
