Review: Countryside retreat Valverde Santar Hotel & Spa

Nestled in the idyllic countryside town of Santar, Valverde Santar Hotel & Spa is a former royal residence whose elegant exteriors and opulent decor earned it Relais & Châteaux status mere months after opening in 2023. Many of the 21 rooms and suites boast views over the vineyards, which enrich the hotel’s wine list.

Although the property is dripping with wood panelling and ornate antiques, it has a homely feel, aided by an honesty bar and freshly baked cakes in the sitting room.

Dining inspired by regional classics is excellent at Memórias Restaurant, while a private dining room with a quirky ceramic-covered ceiling is available for elevated yet unpretentious meals. Framed by glowing white walls and red-tiled roofs are the tranquil gardens – my favourite spot. Sipping an aperitif beside the pond or lounging by the lawn side pool is the embodiment of serenity. Guests can relax further in the spa, which houses a pool, sauna, Turkish bath and four treatment rooms.

Although this hotel is still in its infancy, attentive service and exceptional facilities create an air of timeless excellence.
