Review: City sanctuary Capella Singapore
Location: The property is set on Singapore’s fun leisure hub, Sentosa Island, home to Resorts World Sentosa, Universal Studios Singapore and several hotels, with Capella arguably the best of the lot. Changi Airport is a 30 to 40-minute drive away depending on traffic, while Marina Bay Sands and neighbouring Gardens by the Bay are just 15 minutes by car.
First impressions: Roaming peacocks proudly display their feathers as they strut across the gardens at the hotel’s entrance. At first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking Capella was purely a heritage property, with its colonial old-world main building, however a modern and contemporary design unfurls across the lush 30-acre site. Capella is our first stop on an Asian adventure, and we arrive after dark following a long flight. The staff are kind and considerate, aware my children are exhausted. We’re swiftly whisked to our garden villa where a pop-up tent and cuddly toys are waiting – this is a hotel that aims to make every guest happy and they definitely achieved that with my children.
The facts: There are 113 rooms, suites, villas and manors dotted throughout the grounds. Our one-bedroom garden villa (there are 38 in total, including two-bedroom options) comes with a private pool, outdoor shower and sun loungers. The design is simple and stylish; everything is executed to perfection without feeling over the top or showy. Three cascading pools sit at the epicentre of the property. Nearby you’ll find Italian restaurant Fiamma, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, where I’m delighted to discover a dairy-free menu, giving me far more choices than I’m used to. In the heritage wing guests can eat at Cassia, one of the best Cantonese restaurants in Singapore. Elsewhere, sip on craft cocktails in The Pineapple Room or enjoy epic sunset views from the terrace at Bob’s Bar. The Auriga spa was the first in Singapore to achieve five-star status from Forbes Travel Guide. As well as traditional massages, treatments include a three-hour Moon Ritual session and vibrational sound therapy.
Ideal for: Those wanting to enjoy the very best ofSingapore while having plenty of rest and relaxation.
Explore: Capella is close to the entry bridge for Sentosa, making it a great base. Guests can walk to nearby Palawan Beach or take the free shuttle bus to Resorts World Sentosa and the VivoCity shopping centre on the mainland. Families should head to Universal Studios Singapore, while Adventure Cove Waterpark offers great refuge from the humidity.
Wow: The property offers the best of two worlds – feeling like a sanctuary while having tourist attractions on your doorstep.
