One&Only Royal Mirage, Dubai

“I fell in love with this hotel the moment I got out of the car and was warmly welcomed by the immaculately dressed doormen. ”

Location: Spreading across more than half a mile of private coastline overlooking The Palm and with great views of lively Dubai Marina. The vast resort covers 65 acres of lush green lawns – surprising since it’s in the middle of a desert – about 20 minutes from downtown Dubai.

First impressions: After the hectic buzz of the city centre, this spacious resort is a breath of fresh air. With light, airy interiors and sprawling gardens leading to a beautiful beachfront, there are plenty of places to get away from it all. We headed straight to the glittering pool at The Palace, which was busy but didn’t feel it thanks to a design that gives guests enough space to soak up some sunshine in peace.

The facts: The Royal Mirage is really three hotels in one: The Palace, Arabian Court and the Residence & Spa each boast their own distinctive character and clientele. The Palace is aptly-named as this is the grandest of the three, with an imposing lobby to match its vast size. There are great views across the Gulf from its 231 rooms and suites which, while not the biggest in square footage terms, are incredibly well-appointed.
I stayed at the smaller but more intimate Arabian Court, which makes more of an effort to incorporate authentic Arabian touches into its architecture and décor, including its atmospheric Rooftop Terrace, open until 1am and perfect for unwinding under the stars. Rooms are exquisitely furnished, with guests left wanting for nothing.
The most exclusive option, the Residence & Spa, is a peaceful retreat with secluded gardens, pools and a private beach to serve 48 rooms and suites, and one villa. Its two restaurants are reserved for its own tenants, unlike facilities in the other properties which are open to all guests.

A good base for: A beach holiday with the city on the side. Guests can divide their time between lazing under the hot Arabian sun, relaxing in the spa, and exploring the vibrant city of Dubai.

Wow: The service here deserves serious praise. I could barely finish a drink without an attentive waiter coming to offer a refill, and even the smallest request was dealt with speedily and politely by staff for whom nothing was too much trouble.

How much: From AED 3,000 per night including breakfast (approximately £508)
