Northumberland property Matfen Hall unveils results of six-year renovation

Northumberland’s only five-star hotel Matfen Hall has completed a six-year, £50 million renovation.

Ten rooms and suites, each with original features and marble bathrooms, have been added to the Grade-II listed, 19th-century building, bringing its total to 63 keys. 

The former library has been transformed into fine-dining venue Emerald, complete with oak panelled walls, bookcases and fireplaces.

Other newly introduced bars and lounges include seafood and champagne bar Cloisters, cocktail bar 1832,which serves the hotel’s signature gin, and The Drawing Room for traditional afternoon tea. 

The new 18-hole championship golf course The Douglas is now open to guests. It features a driving range, simulator, teaching bay, practice area, 18-hole putting course and golf lodge with a restaurant and bar.

Matfen Hall’s reimagined spa, Aurelius, will open in a new wing on September 15, with an 18-metre indoor pool, six treatment rooms and a Pilates and yoga studio.

A range of wellness facilities are being introduced, including a Jacuzzi pool, Himalayan salt sauna, aromatherapy steam room, sunlight and red-light therapy rooms, ice baths, a cryotherapy chamber and hyperbaric chamber.
