Ngorongoro Crater Camp, an A&K Sanctuary unveils new location

Ngorongoro Crater Camp, an A&K Sanctuary has relocated to the Unesco-listed Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania.

Previously situated in a valley on the southern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, the camp’s new hillside location offers views of the Serengeti plains.

The property, part of Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group, is now 25 minutes from the crater descent road with access to “diverse landscapes” including the Great Migration calving grounds at Ndutu Plains and the ancient rock art site of Nasera.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is home to the big five, with the camp’s new location designed to foster a more “immersive connection to the landscape” and greater connectivity for game drives.

The brand said: “The relocation was guided by a long-term vision for responsible tourism within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.”

The camp has also been redesigned to highlight traditional East African craftsmanship, with 97% of the interiors locally designed and produced.

All 10 tented suites have increased in size, with hardwood floors, private viewing decks and design features reflecting the crater’s “earthy” palette.

Senior vice-president of operations at A&K Sanctuary Vasco Baselli said: “The relocation of Ngorongoro Crater Camp presented an opportunity to thoughtfully reimagine the guest experience while remaining true to the essence of the destination. 

“From the carefully chosen setting to the craftsmanship woven throughout the camp, every decision was guided by a respect for the landscape, the local community and the enduring spirit of Ngorongoro.”

The opening of Kitirua Plains Lodge in Kenya this month is another recent step in the growth of the A&K Sanctuary collection.
