Alongside the United States’ vibrant cities, never-ending beaches and awe-inspiring deserts, a plethora of impressive ski slopes can be found among its mountain ranges. From the epitome of alpine grandeur in Aspen to the thrill-seekers’ paradise of Jackson Hole, North America’s ski offering is as diverse as it is expansive.

With a host of jaw-dropping views, fine-dining venues, high-end shopping spots and luxurious hotels and lodges, the US might just be your clients’ new favourite ski destination.

Aspen, Colorado

Perhaps the most recognisable of North America’s luxury ski locations, Aspen is a go-to for skiers seeking glamour by the bucket-load – and perhaps a celeb sighting or two. The region’s Aspen, Snowmass, Highlands and Buttermilk mountains offer a variety of runs, including some challenges for winter sports enthusiasts to conquer. Opulent places to stay here include recognisable classics The Little Nell – a regular for VIPs – The St Regis Aspen Resort, Auberge Collection’s Hotel Jerome and Viceroy Snowmass. Step outside and the streets are lined with designer stores, gourmet restaurants and a lively après-ski scene, making Aspen the place to be for a buzzy getaway both on and off the slopes.

Deer Valley, Utah

One of the glitziest ski destinations in the States, Deer Valley epitomises exclusivity. The resort is overflowing with upscale accommodation including Montage Deer Valley, The St Regis Deer Valley, Auberge Collection’s Goldener Hirsch and mid-mountain outpost Stein Eriksen Lodge Deer Valley. The slopes appeal to ski purists as it’s one of only three ski-only resorts in the US and because the number of visitors allowed on the runs at once is limited. Exemplary ski valet services, impeccable slopes, delectable dining and high-end shopping solidify Deer Valley as a dream location for true alpine excellence.

Big Sky, Montana

With every skier having roughly an acre to themselves on the piste, Big Sky in Montana is one of the largest and most varied resorts in the US. Covering almost 6,000 acres, guests can expect gentle slopes for beginners, extensive tree skiing through the scenic Rocky Mountains and even triple black diamond runs. Welcome respite from adventure-filled days can be sought at Lone Mountain Ranch, Montage Big Sky or the highly anticipated One&Only Moonlight Basin, which opened its doors on November 18.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Home to some of the most demanding slopes in the US, Jackson Hole has steep runs that will challenge the nerves of even experienced skiers. For daredevils, a trip to Jackson Hole is a bucket-list must. That being said, beginner and intermediate slopes do feature, and the resort’s proximity to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks means it’s a great choice for those seeking stunning scenery as well as scintillating skiing. Luxurious places to stay nearby include Four Seasons Jackson Hole, all-suite lodge Caldera House, Hotel Yellowstone and Amangani, set to reopen in summer 2026 following extensive renovations.

Beaver Creek, Colorado

Renowned as an understated luxury destination, Beaver Creek is celebrated for its meticulously maintained slopes and first-class service – ski concierge, top-class equipment, modern lifts and private instructors are all part of the package. Hotels here are no less impressive, with sophisticated offerings including The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch and slopeside haunt The Osprey. Beaver Creek is recognised for its awe-inspiring scenery, which can be enjoyed from a number of fine-dining spots such as Beano’s Cabin and Allie’s Cabin. Skiing here is particularly tailored towards families, with a range of beginner runs and kids’ programmes.

Park City, Utah

Just a few miles from Deer Valley, Park City ski resort in Utah’s Rocky Mountains is the largest in the US, boasting 7,300 acres, more than 330 trails and 41 lifts. Despite lacking the quiet and exclusivity of other destinations – around 600,000 visitors flock here each year – guests can find tranquillity during luxury stays at Waldorf Astoria Park City, Pendry Park City or Auberge Collection’s The Lodge at Blue Sky. With two vast mountains boasting varied terrain – 50% of which offers advanced runs – the resort has infinite nooks and crannies to explore.

Northstar, California

Set within lush evergreen forests, Northstar is a picturesque mountainside destination. The resort itself is known as a family friendly spot, with ample easier trails and plenty of activities off the slopes, including hikes, ice skating, snow tubing, snowmobile rides and spa trips. A number of freestyle terrain parks are on hand for skiers and snowboarders alike looking to impress with new-found skills. The area’s long ski season and good snow record make it a reliable setting for a winter getaway, with The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe and Constellation Residences at Northstar being the go-tos for top-end clients seeking luxury and convenience in the heart of the mountains.

Vail, Colorado

Situated in Bear River Mountains, not far from Beaver Creek, Vail is one of the country’s best-known ski resorts. With 193 trails over more than 5,300 acres of skiable terrain, on and off-piste exploration is never-ending. The legendary Back Bowls comprise 3,000 of these acres, with seven distinct bowls offering exhilarating, ungroomed runs for intermediate to expert skiers craving a unique challenge. While Beaver Creek has the edge for exclusivity, Vail is not short of luxury stays, with big-name brands including Four Seasons, The Ritz-Carlton and Marriott’s Luxury Collection rubbing shoulders with independent properties such as Sonnenalp Hotel, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.
