Aspire journeys to the country’s northwest coast to discover there’s far more to Morocco than Marrakech at Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort
A rhythmic thudding fills the air as a drum is thumped in perfect unison with the Moroccan krakeb cymbals, the sound carrying over open fields filled with flourishing vegetable patches and grazing goats. The source of this melodic concoction is a group of four men dressed in gold-trimmed silk robes, who radiate an air of such profound joy that even those not particularly gifted in the rhythm department (me) can’t resist the urge to dance alongside them as they perform against a backdrop of gently swaying trees and blossoming bougainvillea.
Surrounded solely by nature and with no sound other than that of the band (and the occasional goat bleating) to be heard, you’d be forgiven for thinking we were in the middle of rural Morocco. In reality, we’re visiting Al Firma, the farm-turned-open[1]air-dining-venue perched on the outer edge of Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort in the country’s El Jadida region – but I couldn’t feel further removed from the activity of the hotel. I find this to be precisely the beauty of Mazagan: its ability to preserve its Moroccan heritage while delivering a diverse range of experiences.
Coastal charm
For many, a trip to Morocco is synonymous with the sights and souks of Marrakech. But, not to be outshone, the country’s northwest coast also oozes appeal – and Mazagan is the jewel in the region’s crown. About an hour’s drive from Casablanca airport, the 500-room resort is more reminiscent of a small village than a hotel, with a series of buildings spread across 617 acres and a four-mile stretch of sand on its doorstep.
As we approach the ornate entry gates and the grand scale of the property begins to reveal itself, I find myself wondering if the hotel’s size will be overwhelming or if accommodating for so many guests will come at the price of service – but I needn’t have worried. Despite high occupancy numbers during our stay, Mazagan never feels overcrowded, and each member of staff seems genuinely happy to assist with whatever it is we may need, whether that’s helping with directions (it can take a little while to get your bearings, after all) or delivering a bucket of ice-cold beers to our poolside spot to cool down in the mid-afternoon sun.
With toes dipped in the water and one of said beers in hand, I look around, taking in my surroundings. The pool is undoubtedly the centrepiece of the property, encircled by the main building clad in the signature Mazagan shade of yellow. Beyond lies a winding network of paths, connecting the main resort with the beach, kids’ and teens’ spaces, and – my personal favourite of the 15 dining venues – Buddha-Bar Beach, the chic oceanfront spot ideal for sampling sushi and sipping cocktails. A host of other amenities can be found dotted around the grounds, including a dreamy spa, vast casino and 18-hole golf course.
Activities galore
Indeed, it’s not just golfers who can get their sporting fix at Mazagan. The breadth of activities is so wide that, one day, in the space of a few hours we go from a relaxing clifftop yoga session to soaring round the on-site go-karting track, tyre screeches and childlike squeals sounding through the air in equal measure. Another day, we’re let loose with the hotel’s collection of quad bikes to race along the beach as sun-dappled waves crash on the shore.
You’d need at least a week to sample every active pursuit Mazagan has to offer, from archery, horse riding and ziplining to rock climbing, surfing and paintballing. Though these may not be traditional Moroccan pastimes, they are an integral part of Mazagan’s identity, accommodating guests both young and young at heart. What’s more, they are perfectly complemented by the more authentic experiences on offer, such as relaxing in a hammam or enjoying north African flavours at Bushra by Buddha-Bar.
For me, though, the standout experience has to be our afternoon at Al Firma, where we’re treated to a spread of creamy dips, crispy samosas and Moroccan baghrir pancakes, as well as a masterclass in crafting maghrebi tea.
As we sip on our tea and the band resumes playing, Sophie Leroy, the resort’s director of sales and marketing, tells us that “Morocco isn’t just the souk or the beach, it’s so much more” – and Mazagan has proved exactly that.
